I have been asked to teach a sampler quilt to a group of beginner quilters at church. Luckily my wonderful mother-in-law is the beginning quilt teacher extraordinaire back in UT! She already had all the blocks designed, complete with cutting and piecing instructions all neatly put together in a PDF. Talk about making it easy for me!I needed to make one myself though before I taught it, and have finished all the blocks. Next I need to sash them (any ideas on fabric choice for that???!) then quilt and bind it.
I decided to go with something quite modern as I'm out to prove to the world that quilting nowadays isn't just for little old grannies sitting in their rocking chairs! If you decide to start quilting, there are just so many directions you can go. 
Anyone local is more than welcome to come and learn - it's completely free - you just bring your own fabrics and supplies. We are getting together once a month starting in May and will try to get 2-3 blocks done each session. Let me know if you want more details.
Update....when I got up this morning, this is what I found...
what can I say? Cats and quilts - they just go together!
Oooo that's a hard one. I'd look at the Fossil Fern range by Micheal Miller. There you would find awesome colour combinations that could pull out some of the lesser used colours in your blocks.

Great quilt and wonderful color combo. Is the background fabric a Kona? I might be inclined to use the background for the sashing with that gray/white circles for cornerstones fussy cutting those circles so you have one in each cornerstone.

One thing that I have found that works really well for sashing when my blocks have a lot of vibrant color and pattern is a multi-colored stripe with a variety of cornerstones made up of the fabrics used in the quilt. Good luck, I can't wait to see your finished quilt.
ReplyDeleteThe last photo made me laugh- a toddler would have done much the same! Love the fabrics- I've never used a dotty fabric in a quilt (is it because I'm dotty enough??) but your black and white reall adds to the effect- but all the fabrics are scrumdiddlyumptious! Not a granny in sight!
ReplyDeleteI love the dot fabric, it looks fabulous with the background. I would audition some Kaffes or Phillip Jacobs for sashing and border because I just graviate towards them.

ReplyDeleteHI Joanna, thanks for your comment on my 'pets and quilts' post... I tried closing my eyes to read your blog to see if you still sounded like a kiwi...but it didn't work!! :-). We're west of whangarei so about an hour from paihia and probably in one of the most inland parts of Norhtland!! Just as well we love the sights and sounds of cows and bush and don't yearn for the sea!! As well as the pinks I have used deeper reds/burgundy and the chocolate quilt is looking quite scrummy. I hope to post a pic of the completed top in a few days!!

ReplyDeleteI'm not sure if it has been suggested, but I'd go with a small grey pattern with the tiniest specks of colour - I think there is a Kaffe Fasset colout that fits the bill in his quilt romance book, but there must be something cheaper too. I'm so envious of you pupils. The blocks look wonderful.
