Blogging and Quilting. I have done neither for one whole month! Why does it seem that I start every post off like this? I owe you faithful readers more than once a month updates!!
So onto the show. Some of you correctly guessed in my last post that I was doing the Joseph's Coat quilt from the Don't Look Now quilt-a-long. But I couldn't just do it the same way - it's already been done, and well, to me, if it's already been done, I know what it will look like, so why do it that same way?!
I decided to make the blocks smaller - 8 inches instead of 11 inches, and to make it a wallhanging instead of a bed quilt. I will be needleturning, but because of the necessity of having precise points to help in the layout, I hand basted the edges under, which I NEVER do, but it was worth it this time. So I guess it won't really be needleTURNING if the edges are already turned under?!
I also bought a big (18x27") oval quilting hoop like this one....and the plan is to mount the finished quilt in the frame, just like I did with my Flowerpot quilt, but it will be a lot bigger and hang in the living room.
Today I played around with my basted pieces and am so flippin' excited. Next I will glue baste the pieces down, then start the needleturn. The following are pictures of the progression as I laid them out...
In other news, tonight I attended the inaugural meeting of the New England Modern Quilt Guild. It was down in Boston, in a fabric shop called 'Fabric Corner' which had a really nice selection of modern quilt fabrics and more. My fears of driving down there in rush hour were unfounded, as I was going the opposite way of the homeward bound traffic.
It was definitely worth going - I met some lovely like-minded modern quilters, and it looks like it is going to be a great guild.
Your Joseph's Coat project is looking gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteThe JC project is gorgeous, love your colours. What a fun guild to go to.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful Joseph's Coat!
ReplyDeleteHMMM....it's pretty bright in there. Should I take the drive? Tell me, tell me...to go or not to go, that's the question? =)
ReplyDeleteHey Joanna, It's good to see you "back". Beautiful work, luv the gray background. Happy appliqueing!

I am so excited to be a part of this group...thanks for reading my blog, your's is great, and you are an applique superstar! thanks for the flattering pic of me too, so often I cringe when i see pics of myself, and this one isn't that bad! lol.
ReplyDeleteI admire you for making the blocks smaller, looks tough already in the bigger sized.
ReplyDeleteOh Boston. So miss that "accent". I was born in Chelsea......way back in 1962!!!
Blessings,
Jilly
Your Joseph's Coat is looking beautiful! I love the charcoal background you're using. Fabulous! And how awesome that you've found a like-minded group to hang out and talk quilting with. Fun!
ReplyDeleteHi Joanna, Your applique is beautiful. It was so fun to meet you at the NEMQ Guild meeting. I'm really looking forward to the next meeting. I hope we can all do a sew in/sew together day sometime. Best,

That looks lovely! I love your bold fabrics, I'm not good at putting brights together but I do love looking at others' work who can, and do!
ReplyDeleteHave to pipe in here, that background, oh, what a perfect base to show off those gorgeous fabrics! Love it.

I had not seen the Joseph's Coat pattern before and I just love the colors you are using in yours. But then, all your items have those glorious array of colors. The guild sounds like fun, and I hope it is all you are wanting it to be.
ReplyDeleteHi Joanna,
ReplyDeleteI just had to visit your blog after seeing you at the quilt guild meeting. I love your header, and I can't believe you're doing the Joseph's Coat project. Don't Look Now's work is so beautiful, but I was too intimidated by all those curves and I've only ever done raw edge applique. Yours looks perfect so far. See you again soon.
Katie
The background makes the pieces pop. I love it. That dark gray couldn't be more perfect. So rich together.
